Within the first few days of moving into an apartment at this address in December of 2010 I started noticing numerous itchy welts all over my arms and legs. Initially I thought I was having an allergic reaction to something. Eventually my girlfriend and other guest at my apartment started complaining about similar welts. One night about a week or two after moving into the apartment my girlfriend killed a mysterious bug that was crawling across my bedspread. I didn't think much of it until these

mysterious bugs started showing up more regularly. After about a month of living in this apartment I started to think that there may be some correlation between these bugs and and the welts that continued to appear on my body. I started doing some research online and discovered that I had unknowingly moved into an apartment that appeared to have a bedbug infestation. Upon learning of this I promptly notified my landlord (who is also my grandfather) and he advised me to go to Reynolds Hardware and pick up a jug of some sort of pesticide. As a rent paying tenant I felt that this was not my responsibility therefore I never purchased said pesticide. My landlord spends his winters in Florida and I continued to badger him about the problem via phone until he came back to NY in April. I figured that he would take action upon being presented with a ziplock bag with a few specimens in it. He in turn has tried to tell me that they are everything but bedbugs, even after showing him numerous pictures of what a bedbug looks like. He has tried to tell me that they are fleas, because I have cats, but I did not have cats until I had lived in the apartment for almost a month. He has also tried to tell me that they are something called a brown flea tick, which in all my research I have yet to find an insect by that name. In my time in this apartment I have yet to see a single sign of any sort of flea and I have explained to my landlord that the problem appears to be mostly isolated to the bedroom, though I have found a few bedbugs elsewhere in the apartment. Eventually he decided he was going to try to fix the problem by spraying the place himself. So far he has not had much success and I continue to get bitten nightly. Eventually I decide to call the local codes department in an attempt to force him to hire a professional. After a couple of calls to codes I discovered that they aren't much help. They were content with the fact that he presented them with a receipt for a jug of pesticide he had purchased to spray the apartment with, and they told me that they cannot force him to hire a professional. Now after nine months of living here and paying rent in full every months nothing has been resolved and I am facing an eviction as retaliation for my numerous attempts to solve this problem. Honestly I would have loved to move months ago but I fear that moving without taking care of this problem would cause me to carry these bugs into a new apartment. In addition my landlord has rented out the other apartment in the building and according to the new tenants he never informed the of the bedbug problem and for some reason they do not seem to be very concerned by the matter.
