A final installment in this string of posts.
We conclusively and absolutely do not have bedbugs.
A word of advice: Do not trust ANY canine bedbug detection where the handler does not immediately use the dog's signal to then uncover PHYSICAL EVIDENCE of infestation. Otherwise you're just paying a lot of money to have a random dog in your apartment, and to possibly freak yourself out unnecessarily. Many of the more honorable in the pest control biz operate under a "show me the bugs" credo, s
eek them out. Go to bedbugger dot com and search the forums for the term "false positive" for more information.
So, if you're here to see if 151 Second Avenue is bedbug free, I can tell you that at least our apartment is.

I am the source of the other three updates here.
Hopefully this will be my last update. John Furman of Boot a Pest Inc., currently one of the better known bedbug experts in the city (NY Mag called him the best bedbug exterminator in the city last year), came by today to inspect our apartment, as a follow-up on what we'd learned may be the unreliable K9 "positive" we received on Friday.
I explained to John that I awoke Wednesday morning covered in red welts after being (at least relativel
y) clear of such things the day before; and even lifted my shirt to show him. He looked at my welts and said "if you got that overnight, then it's not bedbugs. The number of bedbugs it would take to bite you that badly, that quickly would be visible to you. They'd be crawling all over the place." Which, they are not.
He then did a quick search of my bed and mattress, seeing nothing in his superficial search, and again added that the number of welts I have, particularly as they arose in such a short time, would mean we have a ton of bugs; which his superficial search revealed we most certainly do not.
He told me to see a dermatologist, and left without charging.
As he's staking his rapidly growing and already quite substantial reputation on his quick assessment assessment and rapid dismissal, I'm inclined to suspect he's correct.
So, if bedbugs do turn up, I'll surely be back. But rather than make public record falsely of my building being infested, let it be known where this matter stands. The dogs of thebedbuginspectors.com say we DO have bedbugs, John Furman (who is easily Goodled) emphatically says we do not based on my bites alone.
I'll return if anything changes, but I'm really hoping it doesn't.

An update to the below, so as not to erroneously label a building as "contaminated". Further investigation has revealed that trusting K9 inspection without visual confirmation is not advised. Apparently false positives are common. SO, we are bringing in another pro, who is basically mounting a one man crusade against relying on dog inspections without visual confirmations, to do a more thorough search. I will report my findings here once this has happened. However, if you live at this address an
d have a positive ID on bedbugs, please report of them here.

I want to add, for my own peace of mind, that the above was typed up quickly and I am not illiterate. Forgive the endless typos and the dodgy grammar. If there were an edit function here, I'd be using the heck out of it. The basic idea remains: My apartment, at the above named address, has bedbugs. It's a recent infestation of unknown origin and we're dealing with it, professionally. I don't know if the landlords will help us or not as I've not yet had an opportunity to check.

On the morning of 3/3/10, I awoke to find my previously entirely clear torso to be covered in red bumps. They were only moderately itchy, but they numbered very possibly close to 100 or more. My immediate gut reaction was "dammit, we've got bedbugs" but I searched around online and searched around my mattress and found nothing. I relaxed for a bit, but soon was not able to get the bedbug thought from my mind. I investigated further and found that my red lumps looked an awful lot like bites. Afte
r calling the building manager to see if he'd heard of any bedbug incidents in the building, which he insisted he hadn't, and then said "have you been traveling lately?" To which I responded, no. In fact, these days, as I work from home and it's winter, I barely leave the house. My roommate goes out to work during the days, but nowhere more thiexotic. The fact is, I already know these things can come from anywhere. Anyway, I proceeded to book a recommended bedbug detection company, who uses bedbug sniffing dogs. Today, 3/5/10, the dog came, he sniffed, and he found 'em. Where you'd expect 'em, on the couch, the chair, and in the beds. I've not informed the landlord yet, and do not know what their response will be. We're planning on going pro as those on the internet, with hard-earned experience, seem to insist self-treatment isn't worth it. Just spend the money and do it right from the outset. I'm posting this here to avoid a patently unfair "patient zero" stigma within our building (assuming my landlord was telling the truth when he said no one else had complained). But I do want any neighbors possibly dealing with this to know they're no alone.
