My unit has had bedbugs off and on for 3 years. It's been an ongoing issue in almost every unit on this floor of the building and several other floors as well. They live inside the floorboards and walls, so unless the landlord and super renovate the entire building and exterminate every unit, they'll just keep coming back.

Additionally, the building has continuously had the following issues:

- no heat/hot water in the winter
- roach infestation
- rodents (mice and bats)
- filthy/not cl

eaned (the super does not mop floors or bring out garbage regularly. our level's floor has been mopped three times in three years. garbage piles up in the basement for several weeks.)
- water leaks and damage (cracks in the walls, chunks of the ceiling falling)
- shoddy repairs (new grout comes up immediately, splinters and holes in the floors)

After we signed our lease (Oct 2010) and before we moved in I found this website. I confronted our broker about why this was not disclosed ahead of time. He basically said it was a city-wide issue and how would he rent any apartments? Unbelievable! When I asked Fairline Management (Steve) what was going on he told me it wouldn't be an issue in our apartment since it was newly renovated and a preventive treatment had been done. Nevertheless, we had to throw out our box spring almost immediately d

ue to bedbugs. We have been here for a year now, and while we are not infested, we do find them a few at a time every few weeks. Many apartments in the building are infested and so it is inevitable that they will find their way into your place. Besides bedbugs, we have also had a mice problem and there is a major issue with heat and hot water in the building. Last week, 311 sent a representative to inspect 5 apartments. Rent is always raised, ours in less than a year. The super is not helpful, the building is not maintained and the landlord is just plain rude. This is a problem building and I would not advise anyone to move here.

Hi-new tenant here. Moving in this week, and my apartment is currently totally empty. I went in and cleaned today and found no evidence of any bugs, but it looks like thinga have been worked on recently. Any updates from current tenants? Suggestions? I'm going to call and get a preventive spray ASAP, and arm myself ahead of time with specific info and requests. Any help would be appreciated...

Thanks!

MY HUSBAND AND I HAD PREVIOUSLY LIVED IN 1B, AND FROM THE 1ST NIGHT UNTIL WE MOVED OUT 2 YEARS LATER, WE BATTLE BEDBUGS THERE. IF THE NEW LANDLORD HASN'T DONE ANYTHING, HE WON'T UNLESS YOU TAKE HIM TO COURT. WE HAD A COURT BATTLE WITH HIM PERSONALLY, AND THANK GOD WE'RE OUT!! THE WHOLE BUILDING IS INFESTED, THEY LIVED IN OUR WOOD FLOORS, AND WE TRIED EVERYTHING, AND EVEN THE LAST NIGHT I SLEPT THERE, I GOT BIT, SO, THE LANDLORD HAS TO BE ACCOUNTABLE.

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE LIST ADDRESS AND/OR PH

ONE NUMBER OF THE MANAGEMENT COMPANY AND THE LANDLORD? I MUST REACH HIM/THEM AND THEY PURPOSELY DO NOT LIST INFO ANYWHERE ONLINE OR PHONEBOOK.

THANK YOU, GOOD LUCK W/THE FIGHT

Management took care of the bedbug situation in my apt. There are no bedbugs in this apartment anymore, and they are working to rid the entire building of bed bugs.

Are there still reports of bed bugs at 640?

The 2nd round of bedbugs have begun at 640 (since 2009). 5/6 previously infested apartments in the 3rd and 4th floor areas have reported a return. I would strongly recommend that all tenants that live in close proximity to an infested apartment ask management for a "preventative spray." Otherwise, good luck getting rid of them once they have settled in!

Still seeing these things. The exterminator (who honestly did seem to do a a very thorough job) came last week, but my husband found one crawling on his shirt (that was sitting on his dresser) the other morning. And so we begin again with the incessant vacuuming, putting down the Diatomaceous Earth, Frontline on the cat, caulking...only a few more months until our lease is up and then we're out of here! Now we just have to find out how much it's going to cost for a containerized fumigation of

everything we own! How the mgt. company gets away with this is beyond me.

Hello new neighbor! Sorry to be the one to tell you this, but bedbugs have been found in the "G line" as well as the 4th floor. Please be aware that the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floors had extensive bedbugs problems in the past year. Thankfully, management has begun to be responsive and we have heard that the new exterminator is qualified. That being said I would do the following before settling in:

1. Caulk all open spaces, especially between the wall and floor board. Its expensive, but that

is how they travel.

2. Invest in a $40 Shark floor steamer, the steam kills bedbugs and their eggs on direct contact. So, it can potentially wipe out a problem before you notice it.

3. Use Murphy's Oil on your floor and behind your headboard on a biweekly basis: The bedbug expert at the Natural History Museum has said that direct contact will kill bedbugs although the smell is not toxic to humans

I know that the above sounds like a lot of work if you just moved in. However, as someone who had bedbugs recently, I can swear to you that the real thing is significantly worse and cost us between $2,000-$3,000 between dry cleaner bills, missing work, and paying for hotels.

I AM JUST MOVING IN CAN ANYONE GIVE ME THE STATIS OF THE BED BUG SITUATION

We just moved in and have been getting bit at night. I'm assuming it's bedbugs. The apartment is renovated and we were told about the problem at soon as we moved in by other tenants. We have caulked all the outlets and tried to keep them from coming in but after about 1 month we started getting bit. It's not a lot so it's not an infestation at this point but we don't want it to get worse. We spoke to Sebrie and the exterminator is coming next month. I have tried to find the phone number fo

r the management company but don't seem to be having much luck. Can someone post the number and give us some advice?

Management has finally returned calls...thats progress! Updates to follow.

Bedbugs are now traveling the building. The exterminator has sprayed our apartment once already. The problem with this initial spray was:

1. He did not spray the luggage and other items in the room--because he brought the "wrong" spray

2. He only sprayed inside the dresser drawers when asked

3. He did not drill into the wall to spray-we have consulted with a bedbug expert who has said that this is a big problem as the bedbugs can still emerge from the electrical sockets even if the floo

r boards etc is caulked.

4.The box spring was not sprayed outside in the sun as is required

The above issues lead to: The bedbugs not being fully exterminated. We did a check 24 hours later as recommended by the experts (although not Desmond)--and we found one alive and well. We stopped the search there, although I am sure that there are plenty more.

The exterminator is returning today--and we expect him to remedy the above.

Although, he demanded that we catch a bedbug for proof of their return--apparently eye witness testimony will not suffice.

Management has not returned our calls for days now. When I call the main switchboard our building manager is either on the phone or away from his desk.

There are building efforts to develop a class action suit if this is not resolved and rent reductions are not made for the great expense and hotel bills.

We and others in our building have had bed bugs in our apartments, some still do have them, and more likely have them and don't know it. I have three main issues with how this has been dealt with in our building and one very big issue with the city.

First, while the management has been fairly prompt in responding to (urgent, self-assured) complaints by having the exterminator sent, other building tenants are not notified when an apartment is infested (therefore inspections and treatments a

re not done on adjacent apartments).

Second, the exterminator that has been hired to treat the apartments in our building is not thorough, gives inaccurate and incomplete information, and does not believe tenants even in the face of incontrovertible evidence [e.g. a dead bed bug]).

Third, extensive work on the part of tenants has been required, not just in cleaning of furniture and apartments and inspecting and laundering of personal belongings, but also in sealing with caulk and spackle all cracks and crevices, including around plumbing and heating pipes, to attempt to prevent reinfestation through the walls (which is how the bugs spread and how we got them and how most of our neighbors likely got them as I have been told by longer-term residents that this problem has been going on for years in this building). Obviously tenants cannot all do the sealing repair work nor can they all do an adequate job. And tenants are expected to pay for all of the supplies and equipment. The apartments should have been treated by an exterminator and properly sealed when they were being remodeled (many of the apartments recently infested have been recently remodeled). The impression is that the management has accepted that the building is infested with bed bugs and will deal with the problem only on a case-by-case basis as tenants complain.

Finally, my issue with the city is that there is little to no information from any agency on what exactly to do when one's home is infested with bed bugs. There is so much varying information on the Internet that specific, thorough, and factual information should be provided by regulatory agencies. Not only are there many scams and much misleading and slightly varying information online that needs to set straight by the regulating agencies, but there is no one who can help an individual determine the laws governing rights and repsonsibilties. HPD only takes complaints and sends someone to inspect without an appointment so nothing can ever come of their complaint system. Tenants are left to feel they are on their own.

My husband and I were up last night for 6 hours killing bed bugs--and saving them in a vile with alcohol for proof! We killed 30 and preserved 10.

The exterminator should come tomorrow, Monday, August 10th. We will show him the vile and demand that the bed frames are sprayed, he had previously stated upon his version of an "inspection" that bed bugs can not live in Tempurpedics and while they can not live in a Tempurpedic mattress they can live in the box spring and they are.

We will be pu

tting all items in the bedroom in either the dryer or freezer-items in the freezer should be there a minimum of ten hours, dryer estimates are anywhere from 5-30 minutes.

We have moved the bed and all adjacent furniture away from the wall as recommended.

We have ordered Black Walnut Powder (a natural eliminator of bed bugs), a hand spray (dont remember the name now, we did order it at 3AM), 2 box spring mattress covers (to be put on after the spray and left on for a year and a half--the life cycle of bed bugs even without feeding on humans), a HEPA vacuum cleaner-PowerGlide, and we will be vacuuming and steaming once a week.

I highly recommend that if you live in 640 you begin taking preventative measures so that we can collectively address the problem:

1. Remove all dust ruffles--bed bugs crawl up--wash & dry them at high heat and dont put them back until this issue is resolved

2. Coat your bed frame with Vaseline, put out sticky traps--this will help you assess if they have been visiting (not everyone reacts to bites)

3. Pick up your mattress and bed frame, look for clusters of black dots--this is their poop--from your blood--no joke

4. Post on this forum if you have them, notify Sabri, Call the exterminator-Desmond (dont wait for next month--it only gets worse)

5. Catch the F***ers and put them in a sealed container with alcohol or HP--you need proof to get sprayed (believe me, we asked three months ago)

6. Take digit photos (proof of time & date)

7. Notify the Tenants Committee-Olga, on the first floor. We are currently building a case

8. Call 311 to report the problem, there is currently a report into HPD regarding the infestation--we need numbers!

Good luck--and please, have sympathy for the rest of us--be vigilant!

As of June 2009 there is a bed bug infestation on the 3rd floor. The resident has had the management\'s \"exterminator\" come to her apartment 2X and the bed bugs are still living in her walls, her window-sills --places you could not imagine. All of this despite the exterminator reporting that no bed bugs were found, they were found alright--I personally saw 3 bed bugs in her apartment.

This is a highly serious issue.

We have them in our apartment and have heard that others in the building have them too. It's not an infestation in our apartment, but it's enough and the management, from the little research I've done on my own, is not treating it properly.
