In the summer of 2008, we had a mild case after my husband traveled to China for work. He recevied virtually no bites while I got mainly 1 extremely itchy and swollen bite per night. Initially thought these might be from mosquitos since they only occurred on body areas exposed outside of the bedding. I saw a bug on the rug one morning and at the time thought it was a tick due to the pointed oval body shape. Needless to say I killed it. Then when 3 bites occurred together in one night, they
were in the characteristic bed bug "breakfast, lunch, dinner" pattern, and we were convinced. However, the landlord was not. An exterminator could not find definite signs of bed bugs, sprayed the apt anyway, and we had no further problems.
