I live on the 12th floor of this 12 story 200 unit building. I had bugs until I hired my own outside person to get rid of them. It did take 2 treatments for a studio apartment because the other units in the building didn't use the same service I was using.
I am/was not alone. Over 100 units reported bugs and the pest control company (Anchor) was not treating the problem agressively. Anchor seemed to want a continued business with this HUD building and seems to have kept a deal with the Manag
er, Ron, for 4 years now. Only treating on Tuesdays and when seen or when the residents could show the pest control person the Manager trusted the 'kid' who came in to spray. Many apartments were skipped with notes saying... 'the resident didn't prep the apartment and is not ready' The prep included lifting the box spring and mattress, washing all clothing and putting them in bags, tossing the couch and chairs out to the trash... many of the residents are disabled and over 65years of age. How are they to do all of this and give up their furnature to the trash after having it for so many generations?
One woman who could not do the prep just hired someone to throw all her clothing, furnature, bed, and televisions out to the trash. The Maintence men marked everything with spray paint so no-one could reuse the items and now with a bare apartment and a towel to shower with she began to have Anchor treat the apartment installed rugs as she slept on a newly purchashed air matteress on the floor. Within three weeks she was so bitten by bed bugs she had to leave, shower, and stay in a hotel paid for by her daughter. The Manager, Ron, said she had the bugs in her towel (that had been laundered in HOT) or the bugs came off the store bought air mattress. Later, it was shown to come out of the (management vacuumed) apartment carpet and that the apartment was never treated by Anchor because they assumed that ... since everything was thrown away, no bugs would be there... The woman was 47 at the time and passed away at age 48 from a heart attack. We do feel it was a broken and stressed heard. She lost everything except the bugs, like a fire, flood, or theft. The Manager did not/would not/will not help pay for any heart-ache.
The Golden Spike Apartments was 80% full last year. This September it has dropped to 60% residential. People living there feel that the Management is truly trying to evucate the building of all residents. This month alone 6 people have left by choice, 3 by death, 1 due to medical. Does HUD give credit for an empty building (or the government?).
