Itchy Angel on 06/03/2010
UNIVERSITY COMMONS - NORTHRIDGE, CALIFORNIA.
JUNE 3, 2010
I began to itch and get welts a month ago (April 2010). I did not even know what a bed bug looked like or what to look for. I thought it was hives or something. My daughter wasn't complaining.
There had been talk of bed bugs getting into a couple of units a few months ago, but I thought nothing more other than...yuck...glad it's not me. Plus the units were on the North East side of the building. I am upstairs on the North West side
with several units between.
Then my son slept over and found one on him! I went on the internet to learn all I could. That same morning (May 20, 2010) I went to the Manager to report around 11am. Her face fell and she leaned back in her chair responding..."Why didn't you tell me sooner since you've been getting bites? The Bed Bug Man just left." I thought...just left? You mean there are others with this problem? Come to find out even the manager had them. And the little old lady across the court yard. And the apartment next to the manager. And me. And now three other apartments.
I asked her point blank, "Why, if you knew there was a problem, didn't you alert residents with an informative letter? I didn't even know what to look for. I had to research on my own."
She replied: "Because we didn't want to cause panic".
I have been waiting now two weeks for treatment on my unit. She says they are booked solid...so I am on my own to combat the suckers. I was not even informed with any notation on how to do this. So I am learning. Vacuum everything at least once a day...and I mean everything. Baseboards, walls, ceilings, mattress seams, sofa seams. Since it would cost a fortune to wash everyday or even wash all my stuff...what I did was take it all out and store it (a ton of clothes) in my boyfriend's van. Heat kills the suckers and it gets really hot in any vehicle with the windows up. EVERY DAY I strip my blankets and sheets, fold them and place them in my car with the windows up. Even doing this...last night at 10:30pm (June 2, 2010) I was vacuuming my mattress and sofas again when I saw 4 of the suckers on my mattress in the seams just before I made up my bed to go to sleep. I have nightmares of the suckers. I wrap myself like a mummy, hot as heck, but afraid to leave any skin exposed. I have been bitten on arms, hands, legs, feet, neck, face and chest for the past month. It's embarrassing.
Yesterday (June 2, 2010), someone tried to place a paper sign up sheet at the mail boxes asking for all those with bugs to sign. Management promptly disposed of it.
Bed bugs at 18520 Vincennes (University Commons) is epidemic but management continues to keep corporate's 'DIRTY LITTLE SECRET' instead of treating the entire building. What they are doing is KEEPING IT QUIET...treating the unit as it is reported...when the unit is treated, the suckers just crawl through the walls to the next unit where it is safe. It costs corporate $1,000 per unit to treat so they WANT to keep it all quiet so it doesn't scare off residents (mostly college CSUN students and faculty).
I feel like there should be some kind of legal recourse due to negligence of management. Certainly there is a MORAL AND SOCIAL negligence to inform.
Even though the Manager's apartment was infested, she CONTINUED TO INTERVIEW PROSPECTIVE TENNENTS IN HER APARTMENT WITH NEVER A MENTION OF HER OWN PROBLEM.
I immediately informed anyone who had been in my apartment of what to look for at their place just in case the little suckers hitched a ride on them. Yeah, it was embarrassing, but it was the right thing to do. No one comes over now.
Still waiting to hear WHEN I will get my treatment. Too bad the suckers will just crawl into another apartment and set up house all over again...re-infesting over and over again. How dumb that corporate won't just treat the whole building in one shot and bite the bullet. Instead the 'DIRTY LITTLE SECRET' continues and we all suffer.
