To follow up, our landlord was amazing and immediately called pest control and dealt with the situation before it got out of hand. The bedbugs were few in number and isolated to one bedroom and we've not had any problems since.

Found bedbugs this morning in a lovely home I have rented for three years. Small in number and am hoping that I caught them all, although it seems that might be total optimism on my part.
