In response to the post added April 27th 2012 I am also currently living in the same building and dealing with this situation. I've only lived here a month and I haven't even unpacked my bags. Every time I try and speak to Vedran I'm told all I do is complaining despite the fact I've had to dispose of all my furniture and put all my belongings in storage at my cost. All which could have been avoided had he not lied when I asked him at the viewing if bed bugs were and issue. 310-0000 (then 780-64

4-3000)and find out your rights as a tenant. I will update when a resolution is reached but at this point I've got basically no where in trying to deal with Vedran, other than him saying I should be grateful he renovated my bathroom before I moved in.

I was told the building (10215 108 Ave)was free of bed bugs. (Yes, I asked) But was lied to, and sure enough my first night in there, I saw a brownish-red leaf shaped bug that I have never seen before.

First, the landlord tried telling me they weren't bed bugs. I knew that they had to be because I found two, on my mattress, and knew what common household bugs looked like, and this was one I had never seen. So i took it to Capital Health and had it proved for me. He exterminated, but improper

ly. He only did one suite, ensuring that they'd come back.

And they did. 6 times. I am trying to get him to exterminate my place for the 6th time now. And he always makes it very difficult. He always denies that they are still there, even when I catch them live, and show him my bites he still insists that they're not there, and gives me a hard time about spraying. He NEVER does all the suites at the same time, and fails to do it properly, 3 times, to ensure all the eggs have died as well. The reoccurring pattern, is that they will be gone for 2 months at a time, but always come back. I am trying so hard to get out of this place because I haven't had a decent night of sleep in a long time. I was 17 at the time when I rented from him, and just turned 18, and he constantly tells me I don't know anything because of my age. Completely rude and disrespectful!

Thirdly, he is extremely rude, never returns your calls, and only contacts you around the time of rent. This person, sadly, owns TONS of place in Edmonton and I advice anyone reading this to remember the name given and not rent from him.

Vedran.

So here's an update from my previous report regarding 10215 - 18th ave apartment building.
Huge adult, medium sized and baby bed bugs were found. I have them in a jar. Anyway, after I finally got hold of he owner over 2 days ago to get to my apartment after calling him every 2 hours stressing how this is affecting every aspect of my life - I almost ended up in the hospital because of the allergic reaction I got to these bites; - NOW he is getting pest control in Monday, yet he refuses to infor

m any other tenants!

I practically had to pull teeth to get him to give me back even 1/2 of my rent - which he and is better than nothing. However:

*it still doesn't matter to him that the state of his apartment building is causing me lost work (because of huge welts on my body - I work in a bar and have certain attire to wear which would show my massive welts of raised red bites all over my body

*now that i have JUST finished unpacking, it is MY TIME AND MONEY that is being sacrificed to repack all my things - after putting every piece of clothing in the dryer for 30 minutes, then sealing in a zip-lock bags. I cannot open this sealed bags for 2 weeks after the 2nd treatment.

I remain furious and distressed for the following reasons:

1.How can HE HIMSELF sleep at night knowing that one of his tenants is living in an unsafe and unhealthy living environment?! Apparently no he doesn't care - but I guarantee if he had to live here - he'd be furious and disgusted too.
*At the VERY LEAST he should find alternate accommodation for me until the place is fumigated once at least - not going to happen, he refuses.

2. He refuses to allow me free access to a dryer - so each 20 minutes I pay $2 to dry a small bunch of clothes--> this will add up to at least $100 when you include the bedding, jackets that I brought. Yet I'm paying for the drying which is tedious and time consuming - for a problem HE by law, SHOULD take care of because he is responsible for the entire pest-elimination procedure. A part of this process is bagging ALL my personal belongings in zip-lock bags or garbage bags - to buy enough will cost over $100 - again he refuses to pay for.

3. Finally, he outright lied to my face! I actually trusted the guy! However, he told me "he's NEVER had a report of bed bugs in this particular building"......yet I ran into a neighbor and she had problems in august and her place was fumigated. As well, 3 other apartments have been treated for bedbugs as well in the past 6 months.

I'm doing what I have to do until the end of the month then leaving - this building is obviously infested with bed bugs and has been for a very long time other wise there wouldn't be so many reports and certainly not so many sizes and ages of bugs.

For now I'll be calling:

1. Public Health Inspector who will stop by to investigate and make sure things are handled properly.

2. LTA of Alberta to receive exact laws on a landlord's role in a situation like this one.

3. There is a public lab the bugs can be taken to and i.d.'ed under a microscope.

4. Keeping receipts for the meds & creams & ointments I have to take for the bites, the bags and the drying - > I still plan to push for reimbursement of these costs - they might seem insignificant but when you don't have paid sick leave with pay, you have zero income.

5. Seeing my doctor to get a 2nd opinion on the bites, document on record he's seen these, and provide me a professional letter.

6. As of tomorrow, I'm beginning to re-pack my things which is a pain in the @&&! And, I must leave with my dogs for at least 24 hours - where?! I have no idea. And I'm leaving at months's end - I actually like this little place - but this place has caused me to many problems already......as well:

The bed bugs will never be gone until this entire building is entirely vacated and shut down for a month or so and treated and cleaned PROPERLY. Sure it's a huge loss now - but much more gain in the future - no more bugs, no more complaints, happy tenants who will want to stay longer - no more useless fumigation of a few apartments at a time.

Anyway, my personal opinion - DON'T MOVE IN HERE. And any other apartments or homes you moved into, get a history and past and current conditions of the place and pest problems. I regret this but, it's a lesson learned.

Good-luck

I just moved into a one bedroom apartment in this building: 10215 - 108th avenue.
It is a cute little place and iss furnished with kitchenware, a couch, bed, t.v.
A few days after moving in, I started getting huge patches of bites.
At first I didn't know what they were until they started appearing all over my body.
They are typical bites of bed bugs.
I went through the bed and the couch and they are covered in bed bugs.
I have not worked for several days because of this - I get a fairly ba

d allergic reaction to bites of any kind and these are awful.
I'm trying to get hold of the landlord - Vedran Rentals - so far he's not returning my calls.
I just unpacked all of my things.
There is no way I can wash the bugs out now - this apartment and probably the entire building HAS to be fumigated and the bed and couch removed from my place.

I would prefer to remain anonymous at this point because I have no help and no money and no place other place to live yet.

I will report back with a contact email once I get this sorted out and give you an update.

I highly recommend staying away from apartments in this area or at least get a background check and sign a lease - this I did not do which I regret now.

This building definately has them some apt very very bad owners refusing to do anything health inspector is to go in on Monday. However this whole building if marked with sever problems and landlords and definately slum to the max. Fortunately the residence are all starting to act. I suggest you contact landlords and tenants there is something about withholding your rent till the owners do something, or call health inspector they will definatly come in and can force the building owners

to fumigate. This building all the suites also have cockroaches as well.
