Management Response on 07/19/2011
Although the National Pest Management Association estimates there has been an increase in bed bugs in America over the last several years, the increase actually has had a minimal impact on the vast majority of hotels.
Bed bugs are brought into hotels by guests; it is not a hotel sanitation issue. Education, awareness, and care are critical. A trained and knowledgeable housekeeping staff is one of the best lines of defense, along with having regular pest control inspections by an independent
professional service.
Our staff is very vigilant with our pest control and monitoring at our property. In the event a situation like this were to occur, our hotel has a precise and documented procedure developed in collaboration with industry experts to eliminate the issue, which goes above and beyond pest control recommendations. Please rest assured our hotel does not take a guest report of bed bugs lightly. The health and comfort of our guests is of the utmost importance.
In regards to the last posting, we have not received any reports from guests regarding bed bugs, nor have we had any discoveries during routine inspections. However, we would like to opportunity to have your room inspected by our professional pest management company.
Regards,
Nikolaus Kern

We spent the night at the Biddle Hotel, Indiana Memorial Union, on July 5, 2011 for new student orientation. I neglected to check the bed, as is my custom when my family travels. My bad -- I awoke badly bitten. Unfortunately, there was little time to report the incident as we had to rush off to the next orientation event. Fortunately, the dorm room where our incoming student stayed was bug-free. We intend to equip our child with a mattress pad that should prevent bedbug infestation, and adv
ise that vigilance is the best policy where beg bugs are concerned.

We stayed here in May 2009 - it was the worst experience ever. I was alone with 2 young children. Found tons of dead bed bugs along the walls and carpeting. There were many live and dead giant flies as well. Contacted the front desk and they were so nonchalant about it, no apologies, no empathy. Unfortunately, we had to stay there due to a wedding onsite and lack of options, so asked for a new room. Should have asked for a refund.

In response to the post from Anon:
I am the hotel manager for the Indiana Memorial Union, I am going to copy and paste a copy of the letter to the editor I wrote this past summer when a story about bed bugs broke in our local paper and sighted us as a location of them, I think it clarifies the situation and states the true facts of any issues we have had.
“In response to the recent articles regarding the local bedbug “epidemic”, we would like to set the record straight regarding the
evidence of a bedbug infestation at the Indiana Memorial Union” as Mr. Lame referred to it. Over the course of the past three years the IMU has had two bedbug incidents; in both cases the outbreak was isolated to a single hotel room. The incidents were not related to one another and happened almost a year apart from each other. It has been over a year since the most recent incident. In both cases the IMU went to extensive and costly lengths to prevent this problem from spreading, even going beyond the recommendations of our professional pest control provider. Additionally, our housekeeping staff has received training on how to monitor our rooms for signs of bedbugs. We will continue to work with our professional pest control provider to stay up to date on treatments should another incident occur to eradicate any bedbugs and prevent an infestation in the IMU. The IMU was not contacted for information for the article that was published or we would have made the facts about the situation clear from the start.”
In both cases we were in contact with the guests involved. However, due to the increased media coverage we recieve a lot of "flase alarms" which I beleive is the case with the previous post from "Anon".

About 18 months ago (although I've heard of reports since). Got a faceful of bites, guess the pillows were infested. Reported it to the hotel manager - not only was I still billed, I never received any followup communications or an apology.
