I stayed at the Staybridge this past Monday through Thursday (yesterday), June 18-21, 2012.
Being meticulous to a fault at times, I inspected every inch of my room when I first arrived, which had a medicinal odor to it, and seemed a little worn (these are family-friendly rooms with small kitchen efficiencies), but it had a king-sized bed and seemed manageable. Besides, the front desk said that the hotel was completely booked for our conference down the road.
The first night I awoke thin
king that something was biting my leg. I moved the sheets around, and being in a sleepy haze, and without my contact lenses, did not see a thing, and I chalked it up to silly paranoia. The second night I did not sleep well again, but did not see anything, as I checked before I went to sleep. Still, however, I kept my suitcase up off of the floor, as usual, and hung only a few items in the closet, keeping my suitcase closed for the most part.
The last night there I awoke extra-early to pack (around 5:40 a.m.) but couldn't wake up fully, as I'd had another restless night. As I sat on the bed in the darkened room with just the TV on, I looked to my right, and saw what I dreaded: bed bugs, two large and four or five other small ones. This time I had my glasses on, and just freaked out completely and killed as many as I could. As I was trying to separate items into bags and get the heck out of there, I saw one on the bathroom wall and put it under a glass for management to see just in case they did not believe me.
Interestingly, they did not seem surprised, and gave me one night off of my bill, but I have been terrified of bringing any of these critters home, so I placed everything - clothes I wore home and all - into plastic bags while in my garage, and spent the entire day today disinfecting items and running them through the dryer using a Dryel bag, then washing what doesn't need drycleaning, and then drying everything again.
Now I think I see them EVERYWHERE and am so upset it is hard to sleep. I keep praying I have taken every possible precaution. It seems to me that the hotel should have known about this...and strangely enough, there did not appear to be anyone staying in the two rooms adjacent to mine on the 6th floor, even in a "packed" hotel.
